The Foothills Food Bank has outgrown its current location and has a wonderful opportunity to move to a new location: the next building at the East Whatcom Regional Resource Center!
The new space at the Resource Center will provide storage, a distribution center and a hub for mobile services. The plan is for the Resource Center to be a host to healthy food access activities, like community meals, gardening, and education (you can read all about it in the Foothills Food Access Plan).
On Tuesday May 26, 2015, at 7:00 pm, the County Council will hold a public hearing to hear from the community about a grant application that will provide $750,00.00 towards the construction of the new building. After the hearing, the Council will vote on a Resolution, which if it passes, will support the grant application to obtain the funds for the new building.
How can you support the Food Bank? Let the Council know that you want them to vote in favor of the grant application!
Email them email@example.com
Write them a letter (but it needs to be received by Tuesday May 26!):
311 Grand Avenue
Bellingham, WA 98225
Or come to the public hearing at the Council meeting on Tuesday May 26 at 7:00 pm, at Council Chambers (311 Grand Avenue, Bellingham). There will be time for public comments – each person is allowed three minutes to speak. I also encourage you to stand to show your support as other community members voice their support for the proposal.
If you wish to submit a written comment, here’s just an example of what you could say to the Council:
Re: AB2015-165 – Community Development Block Grant for the East Whatcom Regional Resource Center
Please support the Foothills Food Bank by voting in favor of the Resolution authorizing the County Executive to submit an application for a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), for funds to be used for construction of an additional multipurpose building at the East Whatcom Regional Resource Center.
The Food Bank desperately needs more space and cannot expand at its current location. Hundreds of families rely on the Food Bank and this grant will allow the Food Bank to expand its services from distribution of food alone, to include events like community meals, gardening, and education.
Families in the Foothills have limited services available and the addition of another building at the Resource Center will also provide much needed indoor and outdoor recreation space for youth, and a site for a local farmers market.
Really, just one or two sentences expressing your support of the grant and the Food Bank is all the Council needs.
If you would like to find out more about the proposal and the grant, details are on the Agenda Bill (AB2015-165), which will be linked to the County Council Agenda for the May 26 meeting (it should be posted on the County’s website by Thursday May 21).
